Dr. Benjamin Wong

Dr. Benjamin Wong is a classical pianist and accomplished educator. Originally from Hong Kong, Dr. Wong began his musical journey at the age of five. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Brigham Young University, a Master of Music from Boston University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Utah. His mentors include prominent pianists such as Sergey Schpekin, Paval Nersessian, Susan Duehlmeier, Ning Lu, Jie Lu, Jason Kwak, Daria Rabotkina, and Robin Hancock. He has also participated in masterclasses with renowned artists like John O’Conor and Nelita True. Dr. Wong has performed solo concerts across Hong Kong, Canada, and the United States and has collaborated extensively in chamber music settings. His professional experience includes serving as an accompanist for the Brigham Young University-Hawaii Chorale, working with chamber groups in Boston, and being a regular member of the New Music Ensemble at the University of Utah.

Passionate about teaching, Dr. Wong is a published author in Piano Magazine, the leading journal dedicated to piano pedagogy, where he shares his insights on effective piano practice. His doctoral research delves into this same topic, with collaborations involving respected pedagogues such as Lydia Artymiw and Ory Shihor. Dr. Wong’s teaching philosophy centers on the development of artistry—an integration of a solid technical foundation and imaginative, expressive playing. This approach reflects his years of professional training, academic study, research, and teaching experience.

Dr. Wong’s students consistently excel in competitions, festivals, and exams, earning top prizes, high rankings, and distinctions. Under his guidance, students achieve remarkable success, including winning prestigious competitions, achieving top regional exam scores, and receiving the highest ratings in piano festivals.

In addition to his teaching and performance accomplishments, Dr. Wong has received numerous awards and recognitions. He won first prize in the American Protégé Competition and second prize in the North International Competition. He has been awarded multiple full scholarships, was named to the Dean’s List, and graduated from BYU with Phi Kappa Phi honors. He also earned the ATCL performing diploma from the Trinity School of Music, London, with distinction.
